Simple Comforts….. Macaroni and Cheese

Macaroni and Cheese

Macaroni and Cheese is the quintessential comfort food enjoyed by adults and children alike. In fact, it is probably the most popular of all comfort food! Food historians differ on the origins of macaroni and cheese, however all agree that during the mid – 1930’s when Kraft Foods introduced the Kraft Dinner (macaroni and cheese), the popularity of this dish took off! Today, I would venture that millions of people enjoy some version of macaroni and cheese everyday of the year in restaurants or in their home.

The homemade version of macaroni and cheese is quite simple; layers of macaroni, grated cheese, salt, pepper and typically a white sauce to bind everything together. It can be made stove-top or baked in the oven.

There are a number of ways to “jazz up” the basic recipe by including different types of meat, multiple varieties of cheese, sour cream and various herbs. My family has enjoyed the Baked Macaroni and Cheese recipe. It’s creamy with lots of cheese and topped off with a dusting of crunchy Panko bread crumbs. For an “over the top” macaroni and cheese experience, try the Macaroni and Cheese Carbonara. Best of all, use your imagination and create your own macaroni and cheese favorite.
